Praying for rain: rabbis and wonder-workers

Commencement and sufficiency of seasonal rains were critical matters in agricultural Israel. The Talmud specifies a sequence of increasingly rigorous responses to drought and to this day our liturgy echoes these concerns. The Talmud also reports the failure of rabbinic prayers and the efficacy of wonder-workers. The attention given Honi the Circle-maker may hint at the solidification of rabbinic authority.
