Illuminating the darkness: the meaning of havdalah.

The spices and candle... the blessing over distinctions at shabbat's end. All this re-enacts an entire story, in which we confront death and exile, and respond with kindness and restraint. We will examine the biblical sources of the havdalah blessing; marvel at the Rabbinic story of the first havdalah; and consider how we can bring true distinction to our lives.
