Freewill is thought to be necessary for the very idea of a mitzvah to make sense. The problem is that it's not clear that the notion of freewill itself makes sense. Medieval thinkers from Saadia Gaon to Hasdai Crescas struggled mightily with this question and came to some surprising conclusions as we will discover in this session.
